Day 2 Luleå- Sandön, 16.8 km paddle
Your day will start with a healthy and hearty breakfast at the hotel before you head of by van to Tjuvholmssundet – the channel between the island of Sandön and the mainland which has been the main shipping channel to Luleå since ancient times. Here, bright and early Kayak school begins before we start the “real” tour.
Your expert guides will cover the practical use of safety equipment incl. life vests and GPS/satellite communications, fit the kayak to you, and learn the paddle strokes and techniques you will need over the next 3 exciting days. When everybody feels comfortable with the kayaks and your guide is satisfied with all preparations and weather conditions, we´ll start the paddling, leaving the city of Luleå behind headed to the largest island in the archipelago, Sandön.
We will spend your first night on Sandön at ‘The Nest’ base camp in a 3-person Tentsile tree tent. We will set up the camp, cook dinner and tell tall tales together. In the evening you can go to the sauna, swim, go for a walk on the beach, the time is yours to relax and enjoy the midnight sun at the gateway to the archipelago.
Sandön Island – Situated in the Lule river outlet in the Bay of Bothnia and is the largest island in the Luleå archipelago with an area of not less than 2570 hectares and a large number of year round residents. Sandön is, as the name suggests, entirely constructed of sand, gravel and other sediment from the Luleå River. The island is relatively flat with fine pine trees and shallow sandy beaches.
Accommodation: The Nest Base Camp – Home is made up of Tentsile Tree Tents that combines the comfort and versatility of a hammock with the security and multi-person-occupancy of a tent. Our tents are suspended shelters that are unimpeded by wet, rocky or uneven ground conditions and will literally take your camping experience to a new level!
They all come with a fully enclosed micro insect mesh roof and removable UV resistant, PU-coated and waterproof polyester fabric rainfly so you can enjoy the stars on a clear night. They are designed to be suspended in tension, they are unaffected by topography or water, and they also provide increased separation from bugs, biteies and other yucky things. Day 3 Sandön-Junkön-Sandön 13.0 km paddle and 7.2 km hike
Your day will start with a hearty campfire breakfast before taking off with our kayaks and hiking boots. Today we will paddle 6.5 km from Sandön to Junkön, hike 7 km across the island and return 6.5km to our camp at Sandön for dinner and sauna.
Leaving the Nest base camp, you will paddle SE to Junkön where you will make landfall at the small and protected harbour. Junkön harbour is a tradition and still functioning fishing community but now it also has a large summer sailing crowd enjoying the sheltered location, sauna and rentable summer cabins. From the harbour you will hike 7 km across the island and have lunch in the secluded bay on the central easter side if the island. After returning from the hike you and your guide will paddle the return leg to The Nest base camp on Sandön where you will spend the night.
In the evening you can go to the sauna, swim, go for a walk on the beach, the time is yours to relax and enjoy the midnight sun at the gateway to the archipelago.
Junkön – One of the larger islands in the archipelago with several permanent residents and it is also the home port of many professional fishermen. At the guest harbour you will find an archipelago museum, a boat engine museum and a summer café. Adjacent to the guest harbour you will also find toilets, showers, drinking water and grill spots. Take a moment to walk around the island, the center of the village offers an authentic, alluring archipelagic environment with a gallery open during the summer months. There are trails and small roads that lead amongst other places, to a nice sandy beach on the north-eastern tip of the island. Do not miss the mysterious windmill, more than 200 years old. The mill, a so-called smock mill, was probably built in the late 18th century and it is not known with certainty how it came to Junkön.
Accommodation: The Nest Base Camp
Day 4 Sandön- Lövskär 5.7 km paddle and 18 km cycle

Your fatbike ride will be just over 18 km through the forests and coastal lowlands on the Hertsöstigen trail. This trail cuts through Hertsölandet’s Nature Reserve which is dominated by forest and marshlands of various kinds. Central to the reserve is the 73-hectare lake Hertsöträsket.
You will follow the trail up to your final destination, Ormberget (a recreation area), where you will finish your adventure at the lookout overlooking Luleå. You will be met by the support team and transferred to your nights’ accommodation by van.
